The Zonta Club of Fort Myers has generously awarded $2,000 to support the Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS) program. This hands-on initiative promotes STEM education among regional middle school students, particularly focusing on Title 1 and marginalized groups. Hosted at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) on four Saturdays during the school year, the program engages 100 students per session in STEM activities led by faculty and supported by undergraduate teaching assistants. Annually, GEMS serves 400 girls and 60 young women, fostering early interest in STEM fields to boost their confidence and future career prospects. Additionally, teachers benefit from the program by receiving valuable lesson plans to use in their classrooms.
